Sensitivity and Respect. Blog #2

In an appearance by Sarah Silverman by Conan O'brien she made a joke about getting out of jury duty. (see video link below) Following outrage by Guy Aoki, of the Media Action Network for Asian Americans, NBC apologized, Conan O'brien apologized, but Sarah did not. Should she have?

Personally I don't think so. She wasn't reporting facts, she wasn't representing anyone or anything that should be taken as a credible media source. While her comment may have been offensive to some, she is a comedian.

How does this pertain to Journalism? Just like a comedian, news and news stories are seen by many, if not more. To be considered credible as a good source of information, you have to possess a sensitivity and respect for different cultures and community. Our field of media is different from many in that sensitivity, or lack of, can cost you your job very quickly. If NBC had not apologized they would have faced boycotts, loss of revenue and advertisers. Conan O'brien apologized to avoid the same. As a writer for publication, your editor making you clear out your desk is quicker than boycotts and loss of advertisers.
