Blog #2 - Karen Kelly
Language is a complex system. It is benign and unbiased on its own but becomes transformed into a gentle giant or salivating beast depending upon who and how it is used. In today's so-called politically correct and temperate society, we like to think we have moved beyond our biases. However, no matter how temperate we may think we are, we each come to our perspective based on experiences we have had up until this point in time. Are those experiences tolerant of others with differing views than our own? Do we respectfully approach those whose skin color or religious affiliation differs from our own? If we are honest with ourselves, we will recognize that we possess certain discriminatory views. If we are honest with others, we will set those differences aside, respect each other and listen. This is language functioning at the highest level.
