Asian American Journalists Association Blog 3

Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) website (linked below) is a site that promotes Asian American reporters, programs that pertain to Asian Americans and other key features that Asian Americans interested in becoming or are journalists may find very helpful. But one of the features is unfair reporting of Asians in the media.

A part of the website called MediaWatch, is designed to allow individuals who are watching, reading or just browsing media to report incidents of unfair or false portrayals of Asians. If you scroll down the page and take a look at some of the stories it is actually kind of tragic. Some of the headlines are kind of ridiculous:

'Minn. Radio Host Implies Asians Look Alike'; 'AAJA Responds to Kathie Lee Gifford's Mock Chinese Accent.'

Is it common place in America that individuals in the news and media outlets are blind to the Asian stereotypes and misnomers? Do they not see it when the do it or do they not think its bad? The Sarah Silverman story fits in with this because she did it to get a laugh. But some of these individuals are looked at as people of respect.

A website like AAJA is one of those websites everyone in journalism should take a look at during their weekly browsing of the web. It will open your eyes at how sometimes people say stuff and they don't realize how dumb or offensive it may be and they are saying in an media outlet that is being portrayed as news and news reporting.
