The Native American Journalists Association is a relative tool used by media professionals to network, educate, and use the resources.
The NAJA is based in Norman on the campus of the University of Oklahoma. Their goal is to improve communication among Native people and between Native Americans an the general public.
Native Americans became aware of how important the media is when they launched their first newspaper "The Cherokee Phoenix" in 1828. Now with technology, their needs can be expressed regionally and not just globally.
The organization's board discuss each year new initiatives to fit the needs of their members. This year they will be hosting their annual conference in Minneapolis. At this conference they discuss different avenues and issues facing the Native American public.
The NAJA provides many different resources for their professional members. There are job listings, fellowships and awards that the members can apply for.
They also provide resources for their student members to become accustomed with the media business. They offer them scholarships, internships, and awards for their accomplishments at their universities.
It is very important for people of all cultures to become aware if the many challenges facing Native Americans. Journalist should become familiar with how the media portrays Native Americans in positive and negative ways.
