Blog 3. Frank Simpson

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation or GLAAD is an organization with a mission to make sure the stories of the LGBT community are heard so that there will be acceptance and understanding of the gay community. They do this by making sure that the media is held accountable for their words and images they publish to represent the gay community. They believe in equality of all people but to do so they must make their voices be heard.

The website itself has many links to their publications, resources, and places to show your support of the GLAAD organization and mission. There a headlines of GLAAD's actions against prejudices in the media in a such publication as The Washington Post. Also there are blogs and a facebook page to become more involved and support the organization to spread their message.

In more recent years, I have been exposed to the gay community. I have less understanding because of a lack of experience with that community. This organization is a great example of how the media should report on all ways of life, no matter how different or controversial they might be.

Being a broadcast major, I must be able to report on any subject, person, or event without bias. The gay community has suffered many critisisms and slander for just living a different lifestyle than the normal "accepted" lifestyle. The GLAAD shows those with a lack of knowledge on how to correctly report about the LGBT community a way to report their story so that both parties have their message heard correctly.
