Blog #3 - Karen Kelly

How Race Is Lived In America - http://www.nytimes.com/library/national/race is a Web site by the New York Times that focuses on the melting pot that is America. The site contains fifteen articles dealing with issues of race. For example, "Best of Friends, Worlds Apart" has a subtitle of "Joel Ruiz Is Black. Achmed Valdes Is White. In America They Discovered It Matters." The story continues to tell about the friendship between these once young boys and now young men who live within four miles of each other, yet are distanced by race.

Another story focuses on Don Terry, a kid growing up in Chicago whose Mother is white and Father is black. The story details the struggles they endured internally and externally. Terry was told he had the best of both worlds - black and white. But the way his own family and those around him responded to his parent's mixed marriage, spoke otherwise.

I have close friends who are of different races. They have a daughter and they live in the deep South. I have heard first-hand the struggles they have had to endure, so this story is of particular significance to me.

A preliminary review of this site leaves me wanting to read all the stories contained within. It is beneficial to broaden one's perspective and see outside of one's own limited scope.
