It is extremely challenging to use words in a way as to not offend people, especially people of a different cultural background from oneself. There are different meanings for certain words or actions in one culture that could be vastly different in another. So the question is how to appropriately use language and not be offensive. One must be well versed in the terms of other cultures to do this. I believe it is of the utmost importance to do this, especially if I or anyone else were to write a story having to deal with other cultures. To not do so would be ignorant on the part of the journalist. Sadly there are instances where people do not take the initiative to completely comprehend what they are writing about, thus leading to offensive or disrespectful stories. As a journalist it is my job to know the facts and present them in an appropriate manner. It may be difficult to do sometimes, but it is the right thing to do.
